Selenite is a transparent to pearly variety of the mineral gypsum (calcium sulfate) that forms in calm, water-rich environments such as lakes, caves, or salt lagoons. Its name is derived from the Greek moon goddess Selene because of its luminous, moonlight-like shimmer .
